Do you know how skinny you are?

*Names have been changed to protect the innocent :)

Kids are great! Today at school one of my students came up to me and was tapping me on the shoulder over and over AND OVER again until I finally said, "Yes, Star". Here's how the conversation went:

Star*: "Mrs. F, do you know how skinny you are?".

Me:  "Thank you. That is very nice".

Star: "Do YOU KNOW how skinny you are?".

Me: "Thank you".

He persisted..."Mrs. F- DO YOU KNOW how SKINNY you are".

I realized that he was not going to give up.

Me: "Yes, Star, I know how skinny I am"

Star: "Ok"

Star walks away....

Ever since my chat with Star I've been looking in the mirror and I have to say that I am starting to look good! Now, if only I can always look at myself through Star's eyes. He doesn't see the excess skin, the pouchy stomach, the achy muscles. He sees a healthy, lean body. May I spend my time looking at all that I've done instead of what still needs to be accomplished!

  1. You know, I don't think we are ever completely satisfied with our bodies, perhaps that is what keeps us focused on our fitness goals. I think Star's pure, genuine, no strings attached observation is spot on. And what he was really saying is exactly what you gleaned - you are a healthy, lean, vibrant woman who looks absolutely fabulous.

  2. I agree with Deborah...

We've spent so many of our lives beating ourselves up for the way we look it's going to take a long long time to really let go of that old way of thinking.

I know I've got the body I've worked hard to get but do I see it as much as everyone else...not even close. We get there, slowly but it is just that: slow.

You look great. Trust the rest of us that see you for all the hard work you've put into yourself. We all can't be wrong.

  4. It's crazy isn't it? When others see something that we don't see ourselves? The weight loss journey has so many dimensions to it. Congratulations for dropping 140 pounds! That's amazing. And thank you for taking time to encourage me today on my own journey by leaving a comment on the blog. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!
